I stayed up all night, near 10 hours straight, drawing this non-stop from conception to finish. This version is still a work in progress but I am sleepy, my hand is sore, however I wanted to get this out on time for today. It took a bit longer than I thought since I worked with a 11x17 size canvas. My hand cramped up a few times, but it was fun to draw non-fanart things again.
From from a family of Marines, the USMC is a big part of my life. Most of my high school teachers and friends are Marines as well, so Nov 10th is an important day for me. So to all you Jarheads, Devil Dogs, and Leathernecks out there, Happy Birthday!
I am a big fan of classical engraving in the style of Dore, and currency and stock bond engravings, so this was the style I went with for this image. The center image is based off the famous Iwo Jima photo taken by Joe Rosenthal. The flag raisers are made of Marines of different eras from the Continental Marines to modern Marines. The figure is of Marine General Chesty Puller, originally the founder of the Corps, Samuel Nicholas, was planned to be in this image but Puller took so long to draw I didn't have time for Nicholas. The insignias are the different Marine symbols and crests through out the ages. I plan to finish this up with a sky of clouds.
Happy Veterans Day to all Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and members of the Reserves, Coast Guard, and National Guard. And Happy Birthday to all Marines out there, young and old. Semper Fi!
