Description

READ ABOUT KRAMPUS FIRST!!!
More people should know who Krampus is.

Discord is Krampus, also known as Beksnickel is some regions of the world. Though a popular Christmas character in the 1800’s he is relatively unknown in the modern day, aside from some areas in the East Coast and in the Alpine countries. Krampus, sometimes referred to as the Christmas devil, accompanies Santa Claus during the Christmas season. But while Santa gives gifts to good children, Krampus usually arrives before Santa to warn and punish bad children. Common depictions of Krampus have him black or brown and hairy, with goat horns, hooves, fangs, and a long tongue. (He basically looks like a demented Discord). Krampus is famous for his long pointed tongue. He carries a buddle of sticks which he uses who wipe bad children. He also carries rusty chains and bells to scare children. While in tradition Saint Nicholas appears on the night of his Saint Feast, December 6th, Krampus usually appears the day before on December 5th. He lures children to him by laying out apples and other fruits, them captures them and puts them in a large basket he has on his back to carry them away, either drown, eat, or transport them to Hell.

In the 1800’s it was uncommon for every child to get a gift for Christmas due to the poor income of the majority that that time. So it was not effective to motivate children to behave good by promising presents, rather parents would tell their children stories of Krampus to scare children into good behavior.

Krampus on appeared on Christmas cards as much as Santa was during the 1800’s. Mainly popular in Germany, Austria, and the Eastern United States. Usually people would dress up like Krampus and walk around the streets, as common as we see Santa today. The popularity of Krampus died down as the holiday shifted more towards cheerfulness. However Krampus still appears in celebrations around central Europe today, young men dress as Krampus and playfully scare children. And while rare in North America, there is apparently a growing popularity of the Krampus figure.

While Discord Krampus looks colorful, the actual images of Krampus on Christmas cards at that time are very disturbing. My first time I saw Krampus, I freaked out. Usually they show a nightmare fuel looking hairy devil man who looks over freighted children cowering under chairs or tables to hide or carrying frightened children away in his basket.

It’s actually pretty interesting to learn how different Christmas was 100 years ago.
